fabulous friday favorites!

This is a new feature I am going to be trying rolling with each week. So please bear with me while I get into the habit! I will stop speaking and get to the point!

Instagram, oh Instagram! At first I was so excited to get a smart phone so I could join the band wagon! Now you've grown lackluster and I want my photos and you won't give them to me! That is where  comes in. The snazzy folks at Instaport have made it so you can export all your images into a zip file or to some other type of social media. I am for one am HAPPY!

Already planning out making some Christmas presents? I spent all last present creating season searching for clear glass Christmas ornaments. 2 weeks after Christmas I find a plethora! Click here to stock up now!

This movie, Daydream Nation. I was skeptical at first because Kat Dennings and I stopped being friends around the time she started 2 Broke Girls. I was pleasantly surprised  because how can you hate a dreamy, teenage angst filled movie with the Stars as most of the soundtrack?

Do you like to answer trivia? do you like to help animals? lets you feed both cats and dogs once a day. Go check it out. I get the daily reminder email so I do both everyday!

To finish up this really weak Friday Favorites (and I do apologize remember I''m still recovering from surgery!) one of my favorite Stars songs:

Here's to the much needed weekend! Have a good one!

Guest Post - Micaela from Dolce Vita!!

Hi lovies! I'm Micaela and I'm so excited to be visiting here from my usual home on the internet (thanks Shelly for letting me crash!)

I wish I knew how to sew or were one of those DIY go-getters. I'm not crafty by any means... But I will make you a collage postcard and write you a little love letter on the back.

Bits of paper, lace, my type writer, quotes I fell in love with, and a glue stick. Here are some I've made in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep:

There's something magical about handwritten notes.

And for me, it beats counting sheep.

Thanks for letting me share these with you! and thank-you Shelly for letting me keep your readers company xo

infusing at the rex house

So after this surprise surgery, I've been fixated on regaining my health. Before the surgery I had been attempting to work out 2-3 times a week (when work permitted) and trying to eat healthier. Pre Surgery  I am dead set on losing the weight I've gained after illness and a year at a desk job. I am dead set on eating healthier, stop smoking (even though it's only 1 every now and again), and just living life the way I want to. This was one of my personal goals for the new year and I am ready to start rocking out, even though the exercise is on the back burner for a least a month.

This is my mixed berry batch on the bottom and just cucumber on top
One of the things I've never really been a fan of are sodas and juices. While I am far more likely to find myself drinking a glass of grape or apple juice, even those are filled with sugars. I have always loved water. Give me a bottle of water any day, and I tend to be the freak who loves the tap water. So I have begun infusing my water for a little more of a kick. Below are some pictures of the batches I whipped up this weekend.

This is a batch of lemon, cucumber and mint leaf infused water.

So it's really super easy to make these types of infused waters and the sky really is the limit with what you can put in them. I find cucumber water to be super refreshing and I love the scent, but I love mint leaf infused water all summer.

  1. Gather your supplies! I prefer to infuse in glass containers so I use mason jars, Pyrex and my french press.
  2.  Put your berries, fruits or vegetables and herbs in your jars.
  3. I add ice to the top and then I pour in cold water until the jar is filled.
  4. I then take a wood spoon and kind of crush the berries, herbs and veggies. Just enough to release some juice, don't mangle them.
  5. You can start drinking right away, but I prefer to let it sit overnight in the fridge.
  6. I also use the herbs, fruits, and veggies a few times before I toss/eat them

You can't really see but my french press contains cucumber and mint

So tell me all the types of flavored water you've made or tried in the comments!

eat a fortune cookie

I'm having a horrible day today. In fact we can call this the most awful day yet this year. Life goes on and whatever storm is about to hit me I will indeed weather through it. I ate lunch today and had a left over fortune cookie from my mom's visit yesterday sitting on my table. I decided to eat it.

Here is my fortune

This is what I looked up and saw, from my chair:

Montauk really likes the radiators

It's true. . .  the love of my life is right in front of my eyes. As I've said it's been a bad day, but I have the love of my life and we'll survive we always do.

it's cat-er-day!

I love cats. Little cats. Big cats. Long haired cats. Short haired cats. Old cats. Baby cats. I LOVE CATS.
(It really does suprise me that people think I'm a crazy cat lady having only one cat, but I digress.)

This video of cats and water KILLS me. I'm glad my coworkers send me things like this through out the day. Disclaimer watching this video after surgery is a bad idea, when laughing hurts!

I am also particularly fond of this new tumblr know as The Kitten Covers. Check it out the cuteness will kill you.

I'm still recovery from my surgery, and cats make me feel better. What makes you feel better when ill?

well so much for my plans!

I disappeared again! However this time I had good reason. You see this past Friday I was sitting at my desk preparing to plan out some posts for the week when I started feeling sick. So sick that after surviving Friday night, I went to the emergency room Saturday. I was admitted and had my appendix removed Sunday morning. I was released to a week in the care of my wonderful friends and a lot of sleep. Having your stomach cut into is really quite miserable, added to I think the scary reality of having spur of the moment surgery. It still feels surreal. But I may be gone for the week, I've now managed to drop even further behind at work (though I have amazing bosses) and sitting still hurts. I've asked a couple of my favorite bloggers for guest posts so we'll see if they get back to me.

I apologize for the delay in getting my new blog layout fully up and running, but I hope you bear with me, eventually I'll be organized and back together again! And look at this cute, adorable, appendix plushie! It almost makes up for all the pain I am in!

you say tomato. . . .

I love tomato soup. I love it year round. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I don't know if you can tell or no, but I really love tomato soup. So much that I decided to try to make some! Below is the recipe that I used, plus a picture or two of my delicious soup!

My  delicious dinner!

The Recipe

  • Cook 2 chopped onions in 2 tablespoons olive oil with 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  • In a large pot over medium heat stir occasionally until softened (4-6 minutes)
  • Add 1 28 ounce can whole, peeled tomatoes (with their juices), 4 cups chicken broth and 1 teaspoon oregano.
  • Simmer until beginning to thicken. 10-15 minutes. Then puree in a blender.
  • Top with once cup croutons and Parmesan cheese.

I even canned some to take as lunch!

January Recap!

January was a busy month for me, in both real life and the blog world. I'm hoping that February is going to be even better for me. I've been taking this past weekend to put my month in order and try to get everything in line for the upcoming month. Hopefully I will be much, much better about posting this month, but let's take a look a this last month.

  • I hooked up with the lovely Andrea Hatch, and she has been working hard on building me a lovely new layout. Stay tuned this month to see the amazing she worked on launch!
  • I was lucky enough to get a sponsorship over at Newfoundlander at Heart for the month. I do want to gain myself a little following and I love Margot and I've been following her for a while, I've even won a giveaway or two from her! Check out the lovely post she wrote showcasing her lovely sponsors for the month. Thanks again Margot!
  • I went on a print buying spree in an attempt to make my home office a lovely place to be. Once I receive them all and get to decorating I'll share the space with you.
  • I also found a light up globe, something I've been searching for a while. Check out that post here.
  • I started watching Supernatural on Netflix. I am addicted. Dean is my man!
  • I once again fell off the face of the planet. I'm trying to get better. I promise!

These are just of the few things I've been up to this January. Here is to an even better February!

What did you do last month?

Sewing Class

Long have I lamented there was nothing to do in this small upstate New York town. Then a few months ago Project Anthologies opened. This shop tended to by the lovely Mel, is an explosion of color and beautiful  fabrics. I have always wanted to learn to sew and when Mel started having a variety of classes, I've been trying to make it to as many as I can. A few Thursdays ago we made some small pouches with interfacing and zippers, and I'd like to show it off.

The fabrics I chose to use.

Pinning my layers and sewing my zipper on!

Almost done! Just need to box my corners and flip this around!

How many of you know how to sew or use a sewing machine?
